About the Role

Assists dentists and dental hygienists in providing oral care to patients. Supports general operations, inventory management, and housekeeping related to infection and exposure control.

Responsibilities

  • Greets, seats, and inquires about patient needs.
  • Informs the provider of patient status, including medical history, presenting complaints, and concerns.
  • Dismisses patients upon completion of treatment.
  • Pours models, trims study models, and boxes impressions with wax under the direction of the Dentist.
  • Assists in oral surgery, preventative, and restorative dentistry.
  • Assists the Dentist and Dental Hygienists at chairside by setting up trays and materials, preparing the operatory, and utilizing four-handed assisting techniques.
  • Prepares and processes dental materials.
  • Completes simple dental repairs.
  • Takes radiographs per order/protocol and mounts them using digital technology.
  • Maintains adequate radiograph supplies.
  • Takes accurate radiographs, ensuring proper contrast and avoiding cone cutting.
  • Records radiographs appropriately in the patient's electronic record.
  • Maintains patient dental record confidentiality and determines the appropriateness of releasing professional information.
  • Utilizes appropriate dental terms and abbreviations.
  • Reviews health history, takes vital signs at every visit, and takes dental/periodontal dictation as needed.
  • Documents patient complaints and radiographs taken.
  • Enters information into the EHR and fills out appropriate consent forms.
  • Attends annual in-service programs on hazardous substances and infection control.
  • Properly handles hazardous substances and infectious waste.
  • Utilizes universal precautions and adheres to all exposure control protocols.
  • Wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Properly handles sharps and sharps containers.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment according to infection control/sterilization policies, procedures, and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Maintains current Red Cross/American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Changes alginate tray solutions and ultrasonic solutions as needed.
  • Cleans and disinfects operatories between patients.
  • Maintains a supply of tray set-ups.
  • Keeps logs (autoclave, refrigerator, etc.) up to date.
  • Cleans and lubricates high and slow speed hand pieces.
  • Cleans and disposes of burs according to procedure.
  • Assists with inventory control and restocking the laboratory.
  • Runs appropriate solution through the HVE system at the end of the day.
  • Checks expiration dates on sterilized instruments.
  • Manages supply ordering and inventory.
  • Turns equipment on and off at the beginning and end of the day.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work area.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, the dental team, administrative team, and co-workers.
  • Actively participates in group problem-solving.
  • Attends departmental and organizational meetings.
  • Participates in quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
  • Performs any other reasonable requests from management.

Requirements

  • Willingness to provide exceptional care.
  • Basic computer literacy.

Experience Level

  • Prior dental experience preferred.

Education Level

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized dental assisting program preferred.
