About the Role
The Materials Manager will direct and coordinate all material and supply chain management activities, including purchasing, inventory control, production control, scheduling, planning, warehousing, shipping, and customer delivery support.
Responsibilities
- Manages all functional areas in Materials/Supply Chain, including material planning and control, shipping, inventory, and sourcing.
- Understands and applies principles, concepts, practices, and standards for material management.
- Develops a purchasing model to analyze and track historical costs and reduce future spending.
- Analyzes changes in materials and supplies to reduce costs and improve quality.
- Prepares monthly management reports to track and control major expense categories.
- Interfaces with third-party vendors to minimize and control the cost of goods and services.
- Develops third-party supplier agreements, such as vendor-managed inventory.
- Assists with departmental budget/forecast preparation, focusing on cost streamlining and efficiency improvements.
- Manages the setting and achievement of department goals and objectives.
- Directly supervises materials team employees, including interviewing, hiring, training, performance appraisal, and conflict resolution.
Requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business or related discipline is highly desired.
- 5 years of supply chain/materials management experience.
- Must be analytical and metric-focused.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and reduce costs.
- Ability to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
- Proven leadership and management experience in Purchasing or Materials.
- Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, reasoning, communication, and leadership.
- Ability to operate at a level that meets the scope and impact required for the team and company.
- Understanding of the process flow for fabricated and purchased parts.
- Thorough understanding of Engineering and Manufacturing Bills of Material.
- Capability to perform requirements analysis and reconciliation of make and buy components.
- Experience in negotiation and bid and cost proposal.
- Ability to clearly convey information orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems.
- Experience with Oracle is a plus.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally, build consensus, shape/influence opinion, and develop future state strategies.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain organization in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Ability to manage change in an organization reengineering its culture and approach to workload management.
