About the Role

The Senior Software Engineer will be part of an agile product team, collaborating with technology delivery managers, digital product managers, and other team members to translate stakeholder requests and system specifications into high-quality systems that solve real business problems. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Software Engineering and will be responsible for a small team of developers.

Responsibilities

Consults with enterprise architects and senior technology leadership to ensure engineering realization aligns with enterprise architecture principles and software development best practices.
Collaborates with testers and other developers to develop creative, high-quality solutions within an agile team.
Completes complex software development work, including creative application design, coding, and debugging.
Builds user-friendly and resilient applications and services with optimized user and developer experiences.
Delivers business-facing solutions in weeks rather than months by working directly with product managers, full stack developers, data scientists, and business users.
Works with testers to ensure adequate software component testing and participates in quality assurance testing.
Provides guidance to stakeholders on effective and efficient approaches to achieve project and program objectives.
Manages engineering risks by proactively tracking and communicating issues and devising mitigation methods.
Leads architecture and design discussions and interfaces with other project areas to coordinate interdependencies and resolve issues.
Provides input to the Technology Delivery Manager and Digital Product Manager for product roadmap creation with high-level estimates.
Maintains working knowledge of new technology and software development best practices and trends.
Establishes and advocates for engineering and software development culture, standards, and processes, coaching and mentoring newer members.
Adapts to changing responsibilities and accountabilities in a dynamic company environment.

Requirements

8-10 years of software development experience as a hands-on full stack developer.
Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality software, including front-end development, back-end/API development, data/database modeling and design, and test-driven development.
Experience using AI development techniques (e.g., Claude, Gemini) to drive solutions.
Experience with end-to-end AI feature architecture, including UI/UX, backend orchestration, prompt management, tool calls, and conversation state.
Advanced prompt and context engineering skills, including architecting reusable system prompts, dynamic context injection, and structured output formats.
Experience with tool use, function calling, and agentic workflows, including API integration, error handling, and multi-step agent loops.
Experience with RAG pipeline ownership, including building and maintaining retrieval layers and tuning for production scale.
Experience with production reliability and cost optimization, including rate limiting, fallback logic, caching, prompt/token cost tradeoffs, and monitoring.
Knowledge in building serverless application components in Azure or AWS.
Demonstrated ability and desire to learn new programming languages and frameworks.
Demonstrated knowledge of Insurance or the desire and ability to learn new business processes.
Experience in multiple infrastructure and application domains (cloud, network, storage, servers, containers/Kubernetes, databases, middleware, DevOps).
Broad knowledge of software development techniques, processes, methods, and best practices.
Experience with DevSecOps and Continuous Integration/Delivery (CI/CD) solutions and tools (e.g., GIT, Github Actions, Jenkins).
Strong strategic decision-making and long-term planning abilities.
Strong understanding of Agile development methods and their application.
Ability to consult with business stakeholders and provide practical recommendations.
Ability to learn business processes and design tailored solutions.
Ability to decompose Excel workbooks with actuarial and financial algorithms to design, develop, and deliver cloud-based business applications.
