About the Role

Community Safety staff provide a safe environment for guests, staff, clients, and volunteers. This team responds to on-the-ground crises and emergencies to increase safety in the Tenderloin and similar communities, using a trauma-informed perspective and de-escalating behaviors with compassion and care.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and anticipate potential safety and security problems, using de-escalation techniques to prevent or defuse them.
  • Respond to emergency calls and safely deal with or assist in dealing with emergency situations.
  • Maintain a high level of situational awareness.
  • Observe and identify unusual/irregular occurrences for safety.
  • Observe and safely intervene in crises to ensure safety.
  • Monitor assigned areas for safety hazards, report them, and intervene as per procedures.
  • Comply with all safety requirements, policies, and regulations.
  • Check and secure buildings at the beginning and end of each day, and perform area checks as needed.
  • Participate in emergency response and disaster preparedness training and drills.
  • Respond to crises and emergencies with urgency, including quickly ascending/descending stairways.
  • Safely and effectively de-escalate disruptive and/or aggressive persons using acceptable techniques.
  • Operate a Segway, adhering to safety protocols, to move about the area.
  • Support special events, including setup, breakdown, and monitoring.
  • Assist with janitorial services to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Courteously assist guests and clients, providing information and responding to questions.
  • Assist clients in accessing services and programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date information on internal programs and neighborhood social services.
  • Assist in implementing and enforcing program procedures and guidelines.
  • Direct inquiries from donors, volunteers, and the press to the appropriate point person.
  • Move about surrounding areas for coverage and communication.
  • Treat all guests with empathy, dignity, and respect.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively across cultures.
  • Complete reports and paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
  • Enter data and information electronically as required.
  • Look up data and reports electronically through a database.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities.
  • Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in meetings supporting team communication and program goals.
  • Collaboratively work with others to achieve team success.
  • Manage stress and pressure situations calmly and responsively.
  • Consistently demonstrate integrity while working and representing St. Anthony’s.

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm.
  • Ability to set limits and practice professional boundaries.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
  • Ability to complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies.
  • Ability to remain awake and aware during all scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to be punctual, reliable, cooperative, and stay team-oriented.

Experience Level

  • Experience with conflict de-escalation skills is preferred.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired.

Salary/Compensations

  • $43,000-$70,000 annually
