About the Role
This role offers a unique opportunity to define the future of Totara's cloud platform as we transition from annual releases to a modern, continuously delivered SaaS service. You will lead the teams responsible for provisioning, deploying, operating, observing, securing, and optimizing the infrastructure that supports our global customer base, tackling the challenge of efficiently and securely operating thousands of isolated dedicated deployments.
Responsibilities
- Bring together infrastructure and cloud engineering teams under a unified operating model.
- Establish shared engineering standards, on-call practices, and ways of working.
- Champion engineering excellence in infrastructure as code, peer review, operational readiness, and change management.
- Build, coach, and develop a high-performing distributed team.
- Own platform capabilities enabling engineering teams to provision, deploy, and operate services efficiently.
- Define and improve service reliability through SLOs, recovery objectives, and operational practices.
- Integrate observability (logging, metrics, tracing, runbooks) into all platform capabilities.
- Reduce operational toil through automation, self-service, and self-healing systems.
- Lead the infrastructure migration towards the target operating model with incremental, low-risk delivery.
- Develop repeatable, automated lifecycle management for dedicated customer deployments, ensuring isolation and resilience.
- Own the architecture, security, resilience, and operational effectiveness of the AWS estate.
- Embed FinOps into engineering decisions to improve the economics of the SaaS platform.
- Collaborate with security and engineering leaders to ensure platform security, compliance, and resilience.
- Support evidence, auditability, and regional data residency requirements for enterprise, government, and regulated customers.
- Lead expansion into additional cloud providers based on customer requirements.
- Build portability where it adds value, pragmatically avoiding unnecessary complexity.
Requirements
- Deep technical expertise combined with thoughtful leadership and a passion for building great engineering organizations.
- Experience leading platform or infrastructure engineering in a growing B2B SaaS business.
- Deep hands-on AWS expertise including infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform), containers, orchestration, networking, and cloud security.
- Experience designing and operating dedicated customer or cell-based deployment models, understanding isolation, resilience, and operational economics.
- Strong Site Reliability Engineering mindset, including service levels, incident management, observability, and operational excellence.
- Practical FinOps experience with a track record of improving cloud cost efficiency.
- Experience leading and growing distributed engineering teams across multiple locations, including integrating teams post-organizational change or acquisition.
- Experience in regulated industries where security, compliance, and governance are fundamental.
- Real-world experience delivering multi-cloud platforms with good judgment on the value of portability.
