About the Role

We are looking for an Experienced Deli Assistant Manager to join our family-owned Italian grocery. The Assistant Manager will assist the Deli Manager in leading daily operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, maintaining product quality and safety, and driving sales. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong people skills, food safety knowledge, and a passion for delivering a superior grocery experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Deli Manager with planning, organizing, and supervising daily deli operations, including meat and cheese counters, prepared foods, and catering.
  • Lead, coach, and develop deli team members; schedule shifts, delegate tasks, and conduct performance feedback.
  • Ensure adherence to food safety, sanitation, and HACCP guidelines; monitor temps, cleanliness, and pest prevention.
  • Maintain product quality and freshness; oversee slicing, packaging, labeling, portion control, and waste management.
  • Drive sales and customer satisfaction through proactive service, product knowledge, and upselling opportunities.
  • Monitor inventory levels, place orders, and assist with merchandising, display standards, and pricing accuracy.
  • Manage cash handling, point-of-sale transactions, and end-of-day reconciliation with accuracy.
  • Implement promotional initiatives, sample tastings, and seasonal offerings to boost revenue.
  • Collaborate with other department leads to coordinate cross-functional tasks and store-wide goals.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety regulations, and labor laws.
  • Address customers’ concerns promptly and professionally; escalate issues as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of retail grocery or deli experience.
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or lead role required.
  • Food safety certification or willingness to obtain (e.g., ServSafe or local equivalent).
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Basic math, cash handling, and POS system proficiency.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks (e.g., slicing, packaging).
