About the Role

The Lead Sleep Technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and out-of-center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, patient care, and education. This role requires competence in all aspects of home sleep testing and the ability to perform duties defined for a sleep technologist.

Responsibilities

• Collects, analyzes, and integrates patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs.
• Determines final testing parameters and procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
• Reviews patient history, verifies medical orders, and follows sleep center protocols.
• Verifies patient identification, collects documents, and obtains consent for the study upon arrival.
• Explains procedures and orients patients for in-center or out-of-center sleep testing.
• Selects and calibrates appropriate equipment for testing, ensuring proper function and making adjustments as necessary.
• Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
• Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.
• Follows procedural protocols for various sleep studies (e.g., MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration) to ensure data collection.
• Performs data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure artifact-free signals, identifying, correcting, and documenting artifact.
• Documents routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, procedural changes, and other significant events.
• Implements appropriate interventions, including actions for patient safety and therapeutic interventions like positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
• Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
• Scores clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) utilizing AASM standards.
• Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
• Provides age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Performs portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
• Provides patient education and instruction appropriate for out-of-center sleep testing.
• Adheres to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.
• Adheres to AASM scoring parameters for OCST, identifying artifact, inadequate signals, and study failures, and generating accurate reports.
• Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
• Performs routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
• Assists with inpatient sleep studies, both clinical and research.
• Assists with inventory and supply/equipment ordering.
• Assists with quality assurance checks, infection control monitoring, and corporate compliance.
• Completes all ad hoc projects and tasks as required or directed by the supervisor or site director.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Associate or higher degree program in polysomnographic technology preferred.
• 5 years minimum experience as a Polysomnographic Technician or Technologist.
• Authorized Polysomnographic Technologist licensed in New York State in good standing.
• Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
• Current CPR or BLS certification.
