About the Role

The Nursing Attendant functions in a support role to the Registered Professional Nurse, providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Assists nursing staff in performing selected nursing procedures, treatments, and functional tasks, including vital signs measurement.
• Performs procedures associated with activities of daily living, ambulation, mobility, and personal hygiene.
• Observes, reports, and records patient data, behaviors, and responses to treatment.
• Reports pertinent patient information and observations to the registered nurse.
• Performs procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and others.
• Performs procedures related to patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
• Performs procedures related to the maintenance of food and fluid intake.
• Performs procedures related to excretion of body waste and/or fluid loss.
• Provides safe and comfortable lifting, positioning, and ambulation of patients using good body mechanics and mechanical devices as necessary.
• Performs simple applications of heat and cold.
• Provides care to deceased patients and support to their families.
• Obtains, assembles, and maintains equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Assists healthcare team members with physical exams and other procedures.
• Conducts hourly rounding for assigned patients, noting pain, position, toileting, and possessions.
• Participates in the patient belonging process, including reporting valuables to the RN.
• Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed, and escorts ambulatory patients.
• Performs errands away from the assignment area to implement patient care, including transporting specimens and obtaining supplies.
• Maintains a clean, uncluttered, and tidy environment.
• Maintains and cleans equipment, and stocks supplies.
• Works in a safe manner and ensures the safety of patients and other employees.
• Utilizes aggression control measures for patients who are verbally or physically threatening.
• Assists the RN with the application of restraints as required.
• Performs patient observations for safety and specific monitoring requirements.
• Communicates information and basic instructions to patients, families, and visitors.
• Supports the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Health System.
• Attends ongoing staff development to maintain knowledge, skills, and meet regulatory requirements.
• Attends unit staff and educational meetings.
• Demonstrates a humanistic, kind, and caring attitude.
• Adheres to dress code in accordance with departmental policy.
• Maintains attendance and punctuality in accordance with departmental standards.
• Demonstrates knowledge of Hospital and Departmental policy, procedure, and guidelines.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the Patient Bill of Rights and confidentiality.
• Assumes other responsibilities/duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Completed training as a medical assistant or nursing assistant or equivalent training or experience.
• American Heart Association Heartsaver Certification required; BCLS is accepted.
