About the Role

The Self-Determination Coordinator role supports participants in their healing journey by providing resources, access, and advocacy. This role ensures youth have the space to access their power and voice to navigate systems impacting their lives, working within a peer-based, restorative justice framework that is culturally grounded and gender-specific.

Responsibilities

  • Build rapport with youth on-site and off-site, providing support through calls, mail, advocacy letters, and referrals.
  • Conduct interviews, assessments, and develop Self-Determined Life Maps, providing resources for youth.
  • Collaborate with the YWFC team to connect youth to programs and ensure cohesive activities.
  • Provide orientation and training to new staff, interns, and volunteers on YWFC principles and procedures.
  • Plan, facilitate, and oversee Self-Determination Advocacy activities, including Culture and Healing Circles and youth-driven projects.
  • Coordinate early career exploration and leadership development, including job opportunities, scholarships, and financial aid workshops.
  • Engage participants as community experts and provide leadership-based economic opportunities.
  • Collaborate with program staff to build organizing and advocacy capacity for youth leaders.
  • Monitor referrals and maintain relationships with external stakeholders and system partners.
  • Participate in team meetings to ensure holistic support strategies for participants.
  • Engage in YWFC’s movement, policy, and local campaign work, including strategy meetings and public representation.
  • Support participants in navigating systems (juvenile justice, foster care, mental health) through advocacy and resources.
  • Build authentic relationships with youth and ensure staff uphold YWFC standards of conduct and values.
  • Maintain and enter data into data collection systems for reporting.
  • Maintain weekly program notes and reporting, collecting data for quarterly progress reports.
  • Oversee reporting requirements for work plans, ensuring forms are completed and data is updated.
  • Provide monthly program summaries to the Site Director with quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Ensure programs and activities are evaluated and updated based on feedback and findings.
  • Track participant attendance and engagement, providing support and accountability.
  • Ensure program forms, overviews, flyers, and curriculums are updated and stored appropriately.
  • Participate in special projects and tasks as directed by supervisors.
  • Create ongoing opportunities for youth leadership development, skill-building, and engagement.
  • Respond to emails, text messages, and other correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Participate in YWFC events, staff meetings, trainings, and staff development opportunities.
  • Embody and model the values of the organization: Sisterhood/Siblinghood, Self-determination, social justice, and spirituality.

Requirements

  • Deep familiarity with California and local site socio-political landscape and youth service providers.
  • Passion for youth, community development, and issues of youth leadership.
  • Comfortable, mature, and professional interaction with diverse community partners, custody staff, students, and colleagues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with participants, staff, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and general computer/internet use.
  • Willingness and ability to grow professionally, be accountable, and adapt to evolving environments.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills; tactfully address and resolve questions/concerns.
  • Ability to meet participants in the field and community, and attend external meetings.
  • Driver's License strongly preferred.
