About the Role
Shulman & Partners LLP is seeking a Finance Manager to oversee the day-to-day finance operations. This role requires owning financial details, providing solutions, and ensuring reliable financial information for strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will explain their reasoning clearly and exercise sound judgment.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end financial processes and monthly cycles, including billing, payments, reconciliations, expense approvals, and month-end close.
- Maintain trust accounting in accordance with Law Society of Ontario requirements and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Own the firm's financial processes that affect the client experience, from retainers through billing and collections, with professionalism, tact, and consistency.
- Produce accurate, timely reporting that leadership relies on to understand the health of the business and make informed decisions.
- Own accounts receivable and collections. Identify issues early, resolve problems, and keep cash flow healthy.
- Find better ways to operate the finance function.
- Use technology, tooling, and AI to automate what you can.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in finance.
- Experience building systems and automating manual work.
- Ability to take on new problems and develop plans of action.
- Comfort in ambiguity, building process where none exists.
- Ability to test assumptions rather than settling for the quickest solution.
- Takes feedback well, asks good questions, and cares about getting it right.
- Humble enough to keep learning, confident enough to make thoughtful decisions, and practical enough to focus on outcomes.
- Holds self and others to a high bar; does not make excuses.
- Takes ownership without being asked; proposes fixes for broken items and highlights opportunities.
- Stays curious past the first answer; understands why things are not working and fixes them.
- Uses good judgment and acts on it, checking in when stakes call for it, and keeping the team informed.
- Self-starter comfortable being in the details and rolling up sleeves.
- Excellent analytical skills; uses data to identify problems, discover opportunities, and back up ideas.
- Experience in finance or accounting, ideally in a professional services environment.
- Comfort with data, systems, and building processes from scratch.
