About the Role

Transitional Services for New York, Inc. (TSINY) is seeking a Peer Advocate Specialist to support mental health consumers, foster recovery and empowerment, and share personal experiences. The role involves promoting self-help and wellness activities within the Empowerment Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support, encouragement, and assistance to mental health consumers.
  • Share personal experiences to promote recovery and empowerment.
  • Model self-help and wellness activities.
  • Conduct peer counseling.
  • Provide mental health education.
  • Lead information workshops.
  • Offer advocacy training.
  • Facilitate entitlement workshops.
  • Assist with housing-related services.
  • Engage in homeless outreach.
  • Educate on consumer rights.
  • Perform conflict resolution.
  • Offer substance abuse counseling.
  • Conduct cultural sensitivity training.
  • Provide consumer governance/technical assistance.
  • Deliver self-help services.
  • Provide ADL training.
  • Conduct voter education/political action.
  • Facilitate interpersonal skill development.
  • Support social network development.
  • Perform telephone outreach.
  • Sit or stand as needed.
  • Walk for short periods.
  • Reach above shoulder heights, below the waist, or lift as required.
  • Assume and adhere to assigned Job Action role(s) during a declared disaster.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must have personal lived experience with the mental health system.
  • High School diploma or a combination of education and relevant experience totaling four years.
  • Graduate of a Peer Advocate training program.
