About the Role

The Maintenance person reports to the Environmental Services Manager and is expected to perform general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the home in accordance with applicable codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance, servicing, and repair operations to maintain the home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds.
• Schedules and supervises maintenance and repair work.
• Monitors all areas of the home for maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance programs.
• Performs tasks such as replacing light bulbs, repairing call bells, clearing drains, repairing furniture, painting, redecorating, replacing tiles, and removing garbage.
• Provides general assistance to skilled tradespersons.
• Refers problems requiring specialized work to outside contractors and monitors their work.
• Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure life safety and building systems are functioning properly.
• Adheres to policies regarding quality assurance, safety, environment, and infection control.
• Supervises fire prevention and fire drill procedures, including staff training and liaison with municipal Fire Departments.
• Liaises with outside service contractors and inspectors.
• Participates in budget preparation and control, and orders supplies/equipment.
• Maintains required records, reports, and statistics.
• Maintains work area in a clean, orderly, and safe manner.
• Notifies the Executive Director of significant building/equipment malfunctions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Secondary school graduate or approved equivalent.
• Experience in general maintenance and repairs.
• Ability to read, write, and understand oral and written instructions.
• Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, and carpentry.
• Ability to read and interpret manuals related to equipment and systems.
• Ability to evaluate and determine when the services of skilled tradespeople are necessary.
• Proficient in the use of a wide range of tools.
• Ability to train, direct, and supervise others.
• Ability to effectively communicate with residents and staff.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Good understanding of chemical and equipment use.
• Ability to work independently or as a team member.
• Demonstrates focus on people's feelings and ability to turn tasks into positive social interactions.
• Meets all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals’ rights and reducing risk.
• Must provide a complete and current Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
• Must provide documented results of TB testing or a chest X-ray.
• Two supervisory references required.
• Provide proof of all required vaccines.
