About the Role

The Shop Manager is responsible for the maintenance shop's operations, equipment, preventive maintenance, safety, and employee lifecycle management, including talent management, training, and performance management. This role requires strong leadership and customer service skills to oversee diverse shop operations across multiple shifts in a fast-paced environment, operating within safety and business guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Total responsibility for the maintenance facility and all activities including hiring, employee counseling and training, and terminations.
  • Ensure payroll is correct and on time.
  • Ensure all Preventive Maintenance schedules are made on all assigned equipment.
  • Manage all shop operations.
  • Maintain safe and reliable company equipment.
  • Keep labor costs to Company standards.
  • Implement and monitors training programs.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with other departments.
  • Direct investigations into causes of complaints and respond accordingly in conjunction with the HR Department.
  • Act as Company's representative before government agencies or legal representatives as directed by Corporate Office.
  • Keep current on any changes or new procedures within the Company.
  • Enforce compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules, and government regulations.
  • Conduct meetings with all employees to keep them up to date with pertinent changes within Estes and the trucking industry.
  • Ensure good relations with other terminals and shops.
  • Promote good relations with employees.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel is required.
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act (FMCSA) rules and regulations.
  • Familiar with American Transportation Association (ATA) parts’ system codes.
  • Mechanical ability and interest in all types of machinery, including tractors, trailers, forklifts, Moffetts and engines with the ability to trouble shoot and make decisions to correct problems.
  • Experience with repairs on Navistar, Freightliner, Kenworth, Volvo trucks, Cummins, Detroit, Volvo, Paccar and MaxxForce engines, Trailers of all brands, Hyster and Moffett forklifts.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and an acceptable MVR.
  • Strong Microsoft office skills and AS400 knowledge is a plus.
  • Basic math and typing skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills.
  • Organized with strong time management skills.
  • Proven leadership abilities and skills focused in the areas of strong team building, employee coaching and performance management.
  • Strong work ethic and good problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Flexible and willing to work any shift, nights, weekends and in any weather condition.
  • Able to lift approximately 20 lbs., or more if required.
  • Able to comply with all company policies, rules, procedures and Code of Conduct.
  • Able to interact well with others.
  • Able to work independently, or in a team setting.
  • Capable of working under tight time constraints in a high volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Ability to read, interpret and comply with written information and documents such as safety rules, operations / procedure manuals and maintenance instructions with a high comprehension and concentration level to include the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, random drug and/or alcohol tests, and will be subject to a criminal history background check.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
