About the Role
The Non-Secure Detention Senior Counselor position is responsible for supporting daily operations and stepping in as the lead when a supervisor is not present. This role provides a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment while mentoring youth and guiding staff through daily routines and interventions.
Responsibilities
- Implement the shift work plan by assigning shift work to other counselors and monitoring attendance/coordinating coverage.
- Serve as a role model/lead counselor by orienting and training new staff.
- Ensure incident reporting documentation is completed accurately.
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation pertaining to incident management.
- Act as a liaison between the facility and the on-call Director in emergency crisis situations, ensuring the safety of staff, youth, and the security of the facility.
- Ensure end-of-shift communication with the incoming shift to promote continuity of care.
- Provide daily support, supervision, and mentorship to youth in a non-secure detention setting.
- Model positive behavior and conflict-resolution strategies.
- Assist youth with developing life skills, emotional regulation, and accountability.
- Ensure safety, structure, and consistency within the facility.
- Collaborate with case managers, probation officers, educators, and mental health professionals to ensure youth's well-being.
- Perform daily food preparation.
- Adhere to agency policies and procedures; follow and support agency mission, vision, and values, including participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with daily general household tasks including laundry.
- Transport youth for appointments such as medical and court, and in case of emergency.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of High School Diploma or GED required.
- At least 2 years of experience working with youth in juvenile detention centers, group homes, youth shelters, youth diversion programs, or a comparable discipline involving work with youth and families.
- OR 2 years of college in a social or human service field (equivalent to 30 credits or more).
- Successful completion of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification and First Aid/CPR training is required following hire as part of on-the-job training.
- Must be able to successfully complete training to administer medication under the direction of the facility or designee.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule with variable hours including day, evening, weekend, and holidays.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Ability to work with an economically and culturally diverse population.
