Responsibilities
- Process patient laboratory specimens efficiently and accurately, including specimen receipt and accessioning.
- Identify and handle processing of STAT and urgent samples expediently.
- Inspect specimens for correct labeling, patient identification, and specimen integrity.
- Prepare specimens for analysis and distribute to appropriate testing locations.
- Manage reference laboratory send-out and resulting procedures.
- Understand collection requirements for special and referral testing.
- Prepare manifests, track, and dispatch samples.
- Monitor TAT and results posted for reference lab tests and distribute reports.
- Assist in training of other employees and students.
- Perform clerical duties including input of test orders, generating labels, retrieving patient information, triaging phone lines, report distribution, and result query.
- Organize and maintain accurate quality control records.
- Perform patient processing activities in outpatient/non-patient areas, including managing patient reception, sign-in, translating MD orders into LIS, and collecting patient information.
- Manage supply inventory by monitoring par levels, placing orders, receiving and distributing inventory, and advising supervisor of needs.
- Adhere to established procedures and practices in maintaining accurate specimens and requests identities.
- Practice proper infection control techniques.
- Keep work equipment and working area in a sanitary condition, and demonstrate safe work practices.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical/hospital setting preferred.
- Knowledge of specimen acceptability and processing steps.
- Skill in computer accessioning, centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, distribution, storage, handling, and shipping.
- Familiarity with computers, preferably SOFT laboratory information systems.
- Professional, customer service-oriented individual with excellent communication skills.
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
- Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) preferred.
- Reliable and dependable with excellent customer service skills.
