About the Role
Provides clerical, receptionist, and customer service on patient care units while maintaining confidentiality. This role may orient new Patient Unit Secretaries and involves using various office equipment and computer systems.
Responsibilities
- Transcribes patient care orders and schedules tests and procedures.
- Completes and processes requisitions for tests, procedures, and equipment.
- Obtains patient care equipment and supplies as requested by medical staff.
- Notifies departments of equipment needing repair.
- Participates in patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Updates patient care forms, including patient census and diet order listings.
- Greets visitors and staff professionally, providing directions and guidance.
- Handles telephone calls courteously and accurately, taking and delivering messages.
- Triages problems to the appropriate person or department.
- Maintains records of patient location when off the unit.
- Communicates and collaborates effectively with other departments.
- Follows directions from nurses, physicians, and authorized personnel during emergencies.
- Orders and restocks necessary supplies and forms.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
- Provides assistance on other units as needed.
- Assists with patient transport when necessary.
Requirements
- High school education and 1 year of clerical experience.
- Demonstrated legible writing skills.
- Demonstrated verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
