About the Role

Software Engineers at The Trade Desk are end-to-end owners who design, build, and operate the systems powering the company's digital advertising platform. This role is within the High Performance Computing (HPC) team, specifically focusing on the First Party taskforce, which handles how advertisers bring their data onto the platform, and how that data is priced and monetized. The work involves building and maintaining backend services, GraphQL APIs, and asynchronous pipelines for data ingestion, anonymization, and real-time processing.

Responsibilities

  • Own systems end to end — design, production, and on-call.
  • Build and maintain backend services and GraphQL APIs used by internal teams, customers, and partner integrations.
  • Build pipelines that ingest, validate, and anonymize first party data, turning advertiser PII into tokens for platform targeting.
  • Work within a secure enclave where PII must never touch general-purpose infrastructure, designing around this constraint.
  • Ensure asynchronous correctness, handling retries, ordering, idempotency, and partial failures in message processing.
  • Own cross-system changes across services, APIs, and databases, ensuring adequate test coverage, observability, and monitoring.
  • Translate ambiguous requirements from product and business partners into designs and shape long-term technical strategy.
  • Improve team standards through code review, design feedback, and mentoring.
  • Welcome ideas different from your own and work to build from common ground, valuing and fostering diversity.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience building and operating production systems in high-scale or high-impact environments.
  • Solid CS fundamentals and hands-on breadth across distributed systems.
  • Experience with event-driven, asynchronous systems, including message-based processing, schema and data-model design, and consistency across services.
  • Writes maintainable code and is diligent about testing, validation, and production reliability.
  • Takes complex problems from ambiguity to execution.
  • Collaborates across teams to solve problems.
  • Communicates clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Kotlin
  • JVM language
