About the Role

DoorDash is establishing an AI Research organization and seeking founding researchers to shape its direction, research agenda, hiring, culture, and infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to conduct ambitious, publishable research using DoorDash's unique, large-scale marketplace data, compute resources, and operational reach to deploy AI solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Set the research agenda for DoorDash AI Research areas in collaboration with leadership.
  • Lead high-impact research projects from conception to publication and potential deployment.
  • Contribute to team building by interviewing, recruiting, and mentoring researchers and engineers.
  • Shape the organization's culture and operating model, including publication strategies and collaboration with product teams.
  • Partner with ML platform, product, and operations teams to identify research opportunities and drive impact.

Requirements

  • Strong research track record with first-author publications at top ML venues or equivalent demonstrated output.
  • Experience leading ambitious research projects end-to-end.
  • Ability to identify impactful problems and assess research approaches.
  • Comfort working with real systems and data.
  • Enthusiasm for founding-team aspects: hiring, agenda-setting, culture-building, and cross-functional partnerships.
  • Desire to ship frontier systems to production and see work leveraged by millions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Track record of mentoring or developing other researchers.
