About the Role
Compass Charter School is seeking dedicated and mission-aligned individuals to serve on its Board of Trustees. The board comprises voting members with full governance authority and nonvoting family/parent members who provide a family perspective. All candidates undergo a structured process to ensure fit, transparency, and compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements.
Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in all regularly scheduled board meetings.
- Uphold Compass's mission, values, and commitment to progressive, sustainability-focused education.
- Maintain confidentiality of executive session discussions.
- Disclose any conflicts of interest promptly and recuse when appropriate.
- Complete any required board training.
- Act in the best interest of Compass students and the school community as a whole.
- Submit nominations to the Board Chair for initial review.
- Complete an application including a resume, curriculum vitae or summary of relevant professional background, and a personal statement.
- Meet with at least two current board members and the School Leader.
- Present the candidate to the full board for a vote.
- Submit candidate's information to NYSED for review and approval.
- Complete a Background Information Form, signed Statement of Assurance, and Disclosure of Financial Interest form.
- Provide a resume and documentation of highest level of education.
- Conduct a criminal history record check via fingerprinting and verify the accuracy of any credentials presented.

- Must undergo a structured selection process.
- Must have sufficient knowledge of candidate's qualifications (for nominators).
- Must be prepared to speak to candidate's fit for the role (for nominators).
- Must provide a resume, curriculum vitae or summary of relevant professional background, and a personal statement.
- Must align with Compass's mission and values.
- Must demonstrate relevant skills and expertise.
- Must show commitment to the responsibilities of board service.
- Must be approved by NYSED prior to appointment (for voting members).
- Must complete a Background Information Form.
- Must complete a signed Statement of Assurance.
- Must complete a Disclosure of Financial Interest form.
- Must provide documentation of highest level of education.
- Must undergo fingerprinting for criminal history record check.
- Must have credentials verified.
- Must adhere to NYSED fingerprint guidance memo.
