About the Role

The University of Rochester is seeking an individual to support the efficient operation of a lab section or unit(s) to ensure prompt reporting of laboratory results. This role involves enforcing laboratory policy, coordinating with internal and external entities, and performing duties of a Clinical Laboratory Support Tech as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the efficient operation of the lab section or unit(s) to ensure prompt reporting of laboratory results.
  • Ensures that instrumentation, equipment, and supplies are kept in good working order.
  • Enforces laboratory policy regarding standardized assay methods, quality, schedules, safety, professional conduct, evaluation and reporting of laboratory results, preventive maintenance procedures and records, and laboratory housekeeping.
  • Follows all appropriate regulatory requirements and coordinates with all entities (internal and external) to provide the highest level of testing.
  • Performs all duties of a Clinical Laboratory Support Tech, as needed, and adheres to all hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with internal and external clients.
  • Coordinates and consults with other section supervisors to ensure integration and synchronization of various laboratory operations.
  • Supports strategic initiatives.
  • Develops goals and objectives for section that are in alignment with departmental goals, in collaboration with leadership.
  • Participates in laboratory and section management meetings and conducts or participates in regular staff meetings.
  • Follows up on issues and responds to inquiries in a timely fashion.
  • Adheres to staffing and human resources policies and manages personnel performance.
  • Fosters teamwork in assigned area.
  • Evaluates, counsels and mentors, and provides constructive feedback for staff.
  • Manages area specific financials as well as the appropriate utilization of assets and resources.
  • Assists in the scheduling of personnel assignments.
  • Facilitates the hiring and performance evaluations/competency checks of Clinical Laboratory Support Techs.
  • Supports daily operations of lab to ensure timely service, productivity and efficiency.
  • Supports the evaluation of new instrumentation and products.
  • Provides proper instruction and training in laboratory procedures included within their section or units of operation.
  • Performs the duty of a Clinical Laboratory Support Tech, as needed.
  • Develops and implements process improvements.
  • Encourages LEAN practice and timely solutions.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance in line with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and College of American Pathologist (CAP) standards.
  • Assists in the training and instruction of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of laboratory medicine.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and 2 years of relevant experience, or 1 year experience as a Clinical Laboratory Support Tech V, or 6 years of related work experience in a health care setting, including other lab divisions within UR Medicine such as Client Services, Phlebotomy, Clinical Trials, or similar roles required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience preferred.

Skills

  • Highly organized and able to multitask preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail preferred
