About the Role

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an RN who has earned separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. NPs are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient’s condition within their specialty. Medical orders, progress notes, and treatment plans do not require physician countersignature.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient/family health status through comprehensive health history and physical examination.
  • Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations.
  • Prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings, and alters the plan of care according to accepted standards and practice guidelines.
  • Educates and counsels patients on health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.
  • Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record.
  • Consults with a physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria.
  • Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.
  • Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance interdisciplinary care delivery.
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in information management.
  • Develops the plan of care based on diagnoses and individual patient needs.
  • Records, reports, and interprets client responses to the plan of care.
  • Performs a patient record review with the collaborating physician at least every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement.
  • Completes Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required for continued credentialing.
  • Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to Medical Staff rules and hospital bylaws.
  • Supports the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and the MSHS.
  • Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice.
  • Advocates for patients/families and supports patients' rights.
  • Considers ethical issues of professional nursing practice and adheres to the code of ethics.
  • Demonstrates a humanistic, kind, and caring attitude in health care delivery.
  • Serves as a resource to nurses and other health team members.
  • Participates in peer review.
  • Incorporates research findings into clinical practice.
  • Participates in approved nursing and medical research studies.
  • Keeps knowledge current through self-directed learning, literature review, and educational program attendance.
  • Participates in defining, maintaining, and interpreting standards of nursing practice.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of a positive image of advanced practice nursing.
  • Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary committees affecting nursing practice and patient care delivery.
  • Seeks opportunities to enhance professional nursing practice and influence outcomes.
  • Treats co-workers, patients, and families with dignity and respect.

Requirements

  • New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.
  • Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration.
  • Graduate of a New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
  • Completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or equivalent.
  • Instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).
  • Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner.
  • Has a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital if there is a documented work history as a Nurse Practitioner with greater than 3600 practice hours.
  • Master's degree program designed to prepare a NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient’s condition within their specialty area of practice or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program (post-Masters NP certificate).
  • Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice required.
  • For all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019, National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required.
  • For NPs who bill for professional services, National Board Certification is required regardless of hire date.
  • The Board Certification requirement may be deferred up to 1 year if approved by Chief Nursing Officer or designee.
  • Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificates as required by specialty.
  • At least two years of nursing experience in area of specialty practice applied for.
  • Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred.
  • Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certificate (Required Depts.: L&D, NICU) issued by American Heart Association.
  • ACLS (Required Depts.: ED; PACU/ASU; ICUs; Telemetry Units; SDU; IR, Interventional Cardiology (CCL/EP/Echo); L&D; Endoscopy, and APN Adult Oncology) issued by American Heart Association.
  • BCLS issued by American Heart Association.
  • PALS (Required Depts.: ED; PACU; IR; Peds ICU, and APNs Pediatric Oncology) issued by American Heart Association.
