About the Role
The Software Engineer II is an early- to mid-career contributor responsible for the research, design, development, analysis, testing, and implementation of software operating or application systems. They communicate project information, maintain good working relationships, write documentation, support team members, and keep management informed of status.
Responsibilities
- Act as a contributing member in an assigned area within software engineering.
- Maintain accountability for service quality and successful project delivery.
- Demonstrate competence in general software engineering and at least one sub-discipline.
- Contribute formally and informally to team effectiveness.
- Participate in knowledge-transfer activities.
- Speak authoritatively about assigned areas of ownership.
- Contribute directly to rapid identification and restoration of system problems.
- Apply strategies and tools to maximize quality and minimize costs during testing.
- Balance quality and delivery timelines using the “good enough” principle.
- Interpret requirements into designs and code that meet specifications.
- Identify gaps, risks, and deficiencies in requirements and propose solutions.
- Write technical requirements for others to interpret.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Understand software development processes, including planning, measurement, coding, testing, reuse, tools, abstraction, algorithms, security, and basic systems concepts.
- Use tools and techniques related to engineering disciplines such as database management, user interface development, and inter-process communications.
- Create designs that can be realized in code and meet functional and non-functional requirements.
- Use design patterns, system decomposition, security, and fault tolerance appropriately.
- Apply one or more design methodologies, such as object-oriented design, function-oriented design, or data-centered design.
- Understand the strengths, weaknesses, and practical considerations of various Software Development Life Cycle models.
- Understand implications of Software as a Service when creating software systems.
- Design for scale, reliability, and cost in a public cloud environment.
- Use data and metrics to analyze key performance indicators.
- Explain the basic value of a system and its subsystems to users.
- Partner with Operations to solve problems.
- Demonstrate urgency when looking for solutions.
- Maintain general awareness of the higher education landscape, particularly online education delivery.
- Show willingness to try new approaches and adopt innovative ideas.
- Contribute to a strong and cohesive team through professional interactions.
- Engage others, communicate effectively in group settings, listen actively, and respond appropriately.
- Identify problems and escalate them appropriately.
- Identify risks and discuss impact with more senior engineers or managers.
- 3 years of experience and a proven track record developing web-based applications and web services using Java, REST, and other web technologies.
- 2 years of experience with software development using: Java, including Spring or Apex; Python, including Flask; JavaScript, including Node.js, React, or Angular.
- Experience interfacing with databases and integrating third-party products with existing infrastructure.
- Experience with IntelliJ, VS Code, Jira, and Git.
- Experience utilizing AI Tools such Kiro, Claud Code, etc…
- Experience with Agile/Scrum project development.
- Experience with Java or a similar object-oriented language.
- Experience with IDM/OSSO, Hibernate/Seam, or Banner.
- Experience with application integration involving legacy systems.
- Experience with cloud-native development and/or porting or refactoring on-site applications to the cloud, preferably AWS.
- Experience with J2EE, Java EE, JavaScript, and SQL.
