Responsibilities

  • Delivers age-appropriate practices and skill development activities aligned with YMCA values and league standards to youth aged 12 to 18 years old.
  • Creates a welcoming, inclusive environment for participants of varied skill levels and backgrounds; adapts activities to meet diverse needs.
  • Models and reinforces positive sport behaviours including teamwork, respect, fair play, and effort.
  • Maintains participant safety through active supervision, safe equipment use, and adherence to YMCA safeguarding and health & safety requirements.
  • Implements behaviour management strategies consistent with YMCA standards; communicates concerns to the Coordinator as required.
  • Attends and supports weekly games as scheduled; ensures participants are prepared (warm-up, rules reminders, sportsmanship expectations).
  • Communicates with parents/guardians in a professional, timely manner regarding schedules, expectations, and participant progress as appropriate.
  • Completes required documentation such as attendance, incident/accident reports, and equipment checklists.
  • Participates in required training, meetings, and coaching development sessions; follows direction from the Coordinator and Child & Youth leadership.
  • Officiates youth basketball games according to YMCA/league rules, emphasizing learning, fair play, and development.
  • Maintains control of the game environment by communicating calls clearly and managing the pace of play.

Requirements

  • All employees and volunteers are required to provide a current satisfactory Criminal Record and may require a Vulnerable Sector Search as a condition of their employment.
  • Police Record checks are reviewed on an individual basis, and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision-making process in relation to the requirements of the position, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered gainful employment.
  • Experience working with youth in a sport, recreation, camp, or community setting (coaching experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and the ability to teach skills in an age-appropriate way.
  • Current Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening (or willingness to obtain).
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage families and participants in a positive, professional manner.
