About the Role

The Communication Support Worker (CSW) role at Hatch End High School enables Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils to access the curriculum by providing support through various strategies and British Sign Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE). The CSW will be part of the Hearing Impaired Provision (HIP) team and report to the Teacher of the Deaf.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate, through sign and a variety of strategies, Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils’ access to lesson content.
• Adjust communication support according to pupil needs, lesson aims, and tasks.
• Ensure Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils understand subject-specific vocabulary, key points, and can complete tasks.
• Make notes of key points for pupils to refer to during independent work.
• Identify specific language and conceptual problems in the classroom and report to the Teacher of the Deaf.
• Facilitate communication between Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils, hearing pupils, and adults.
• Encourage direct communication between Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils, teachers, and hearing peers.
• Present a positive attitude towards deafness and Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils.
• Discuss lesson aims, objectives, and content with the teacher.
• Plan appropriate signs and knowledge by reviewing previous notes if unfamiliar with a topic.
• Discuss with HIP support team members the most appropriate means of conveying curriculum and information.
• Discuss with support staff difficulties that may arise during a lesson.
• Supervise Deaf/Hearing Impaired pupils in carrying out tasks set by teachers.
• Record pupils’ progress after every lesson, noting if lesson aims were met and any problems encountered.
• Record pupils’ progress against EHCP criteria and individual student targets.
• Contribute to annual reviews, target setting, and reports to parents.
• Prepare worksheets, letters, and reports to other agencies.
• Assist in general administration duties.
• Meet regularly with HIP colleagues and pass information between mainstream teachers and the Teacher of the Deaf.
• Promote the school’s policy on behaviour, attendance, and punctuality.
• Breaktime duties as directed.

Requirements

• Experience and/or qualifications working with children with hearing difficulties.
• Passionate about teaching and learning.
• Satisfactory references.
• Enhanced DBS Check.
