About the Role
Design technical outdoor apparel built for movement, weather and real-world performance. At Berghaus, product has to do more than look good. It has to work when conditions change, terrain gets tougher and every detail starts to matter. Materials and Colour are fundamental to how consumers experience our products and our brand. They influence not only how a product performs, but how it feels, communicates, and connects with the modern outdoor consumer. As we continue to evolve our product range and sharpen our brand identity, we are looking for an experienced and future-thinking Colour & Materials Designer to help define the next chapter of our product expression. This is a highly influential role, responsible for helping to shape the material and colour direction across our product ranges while building the frameworks, tools, and creative standards that elevate our design language.
Responsibilities
- Experience within materials and colour, ideally within outdoor, sportswear, performance, or adjacent product categories.
- Understanding of performance materials, fabric technologies, trims, and construction methods.
- Experience building and evolving material toolboxes that support product strategy, consumer needs, and commercial objectives.
- Knowledge of colour theory and palette development.
- Knowledge of, and experience with the lab dip process.
- Ability to identify and translate emerging consumer, cultural, fashion, and outdoor trends into commercially relevant material and colour choices.
- Experience developing strong partnerships with material suppliers, innovation teams, and industry networks to identify new materials, technologies and opportunities.
- Passion for sustainable innovation and driving the adoption of lower-impact materials without compromising performance or aesthetic quality.
- Ability to balance creativity, innovation, cost, quality, and commercial considerations when making material decisions.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to advocate and influence across multiple functions and levels of the organisation.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and relevant design tools; experience with PLM systems and digital product creation tools is advantageous.
- Curious, commercially aware, and passionate about the future of outdoor product design and innovation.
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience in materials and colour design within the outdoor, sportswear or performance apparel industry, with a strong understanding of technical fabrics, trims and finishes.
- Strong knowledge of textile innovation, fabric construction and material performance, with the ability to balance durability, functionality, sustainability and aesthetic appeal.
- Proven ability to develop seasonal colour palettes, material stories and CMF (Colour, Material, Finish) direction that align with brand strategy, consumer insights and market trends.
- Experience collaborating with Design, Product Development, Sourcing and Supplier teams to ensure materials and colours are commercially viable, manufacturable and delivered to specification.
- A solid understanding of sustainable material innovations, certification standards and responsible sourcing practices, with a passion for reducing environmental impact.
- Highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign), with experience using material libraries, digital colour management tools and presentation software to communicate concepts effectively.
- Excellent communication, organisation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while working in a fast-paced, collaborative product creation environment.
