About the Role

The Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building (HEBC) seeks to implement collective strategies to build community power and capacity to address health inequities and the social determinants of health. The Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) highlights the social context that leads to violence in disinvested communities, prioritizes solutions that help to address behavioral and structural impediments, and works across systems and communities to reinvest in neighborhoods most affected by violence. This role supports VPI's work by analyzing data related to violence prevention initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with program staff and partners to develop and refine data collection instruments and improve data systems and processes.
  • Work with program stakeholders to develop specific and measurable program metrics for operational and performance management.
  • Use SAS or R to process, clean, and prepare data for analysis and reporting.
  • Conduct regular data checks and document data management procedures.
  • Monitor data quality and identify and resolve issues with program staff and partners.
  • Prepare routine reports and presentations of program performance.
  • Clearly and meaningfully communicate results of analyses to program staff, partners, leadership, and non-technical audiences.
  • Write scientific articles for publication.
  • Maintain and update existing dashboards using software such as PHPC, Tableau, or PowerBI.
  • Assist in developing new dashboards as needed.
  • Respond quickly and accurately to ad hoc data requests for internal and external audiences.
  • Work with leadership and program stakeholders on the interpretations and limitations of data analysis results.
  • Develop training materials and conduct trainings on updates to data collection systems.
  • Create guidance documents for internal staff and external users detailing system updates.
  • Provide data technical assistance to external users.
  • Serve on workgroups/cross-agency committees regarding community violence prevention research and data.
  • Manage multiple projects and collaborate with other research and program staff.
  • Incorporate an equity lens in all aspects of work.
  • Conduct special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience processing, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing program or administrative datasets using statistical software such as SAS and/or R is required.
  • Experience using Salesforce/Partners Connect and RedCap.
  • Experience with Tableau or similar data visualization tools.
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analytical methods.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve.
  • Willingness to be flexible and work as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization.
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to a doctorate degree with specialization and one year of experience, or a master's degree with three years of experience.
  • All candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience.
  • Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required.
