About the Role

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is seeking Probation Officer Trainees to engage with individuals under community supervision. This role involves training to perform beginning-level professional work in probation, focusing on enhancing community safety and decreasing recidivism through data-driven practices and meaningful relationships.

Responsibilities

• Conducts court-ordered investigations of criminal offenses to gather detailed information about the offense, offender's history, and impact on the victim.
• Prepares and submits written reports and recommendations using available technology.
• Supervises probationers and provides supportive casework/counseling services.
• Refers probationers to social, governmental, and community agencies for rehabilitation assistance.
• Conducts home visits and other fieldwork.
• Corresponds with and visits relatives, community agencies, and employers to ensure probationers adhere to conditions.
• Prepares and maintains case records using available technology.
• May be assigned to specialized units.
• Operates a motor vehicle.
• May be required to carry a firearm for certain assignments.

Requirements

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 30 semester credits in sociology, law, psychology, education, social work, criminology, rehabilitation counseling, counseling, guidance, or related courses covering contemporary, cultural, social, or psychological issues.
• A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York, which must be maintained for the duration of employment.
• Eligibility for Peace Officer status must be maintained for the duration of employment.
