About the Role

Performs ship carpentry work aboard vessels and terminals of the Staten Island Ferry under the supervision of the Supervisor Ship Carpenter.

Responsibilities

  • Uses and operates all carpentry shop hand and powered machinery, tools and equipment
  • Repairs and erects partitions, doors and windows
  • Works from prints and measurements
  • Performs woodworking repairs and maintenance of ferries, floating equipment, terminals and related buildings
  • Replaces broken glass
  • Constructs and installs scaffolding
  • Constructs and repairs float stages
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces flooring, partitions, window frames and sashes, door frames, door locks and doors, drop ceilings, and metal framing of walls
  • Performs related component work on buildings and structures including boardwalks, fences, and screens

Requirements

  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience, acquired within the last fifteen years as a ship carpenter performing construction or repair work in a shipyard, or at a ship repair facility, on a ship or other marine vessel, at a dock, or a waterfront facility or performing related marine carpentry.
  • Must pass a drug screening to be appointed.
  • Must possess a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the US Transportation Security Administration within thirty days of appointment.
  • Residency must be established within 90 days of appointment.
  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
