About the Role

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking Civil Engineer Interns to support the Staten Island Ferry (SIF) engineering program. Interns will collaborate with internal groups, prepare drawings using AutoCAD, perform civil engineering tasks, and assist in research and investigations. This role offers the opportunity to gain experience in various phases of marine project engineering, from design to construction administration.

Responsibilities

Prepare drawings and details using AutoCAD.
Perform civil engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility.
Assist in research, investigations, or studies related to civil engineering functions.
Participate in the preparation of contract documents including plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
Attend field reviews and meetings.
Conduct field work to determine conditions and refine design plans.
Provide engineering expertise for waterfront facilities and structures.
Assist in preliminary/final design and review, new construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and repairs of infrastructure.
Assist with mechanical and electrical engineering projects.
Aid in the planning, assignment, and review of consultant work.
Assist in managing consultant and construction projects and contracts.
Ensure design and construction projects remain on schedule and within budget.
Aid in the development of project scope of work and structural design criteria.
Conduct field inspections, conditions surveys, assessments, background research, and feasibility studies.
Evaluate field conditions and structural and system deficiencies.
Estimate remaining useful design life of structures and systems.
Prepare engineering reports.
Develop creative design solutions.
Prepare task orders, work assignments, requests for proposals/bids, contracts, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
Review consultant and contractor submittments.
Ensure consultant designs and contractor work conform to scope of work, codes, and DOT standards.
Provide detailed reports and presentations on procurement, progress, budget, and schedules.
Coordinate project-specific interagency issues.
Conduct field inspections before and during design and construction.
Perform Resident Engineer and Inspection (REI) services on small to medium scale projects.
Provide engineering assessments, opinions, and services as requested.

Requirements

A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.
Must undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC.
TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment and maintained for the duration of employment.
