About the Role

The WSIAT is seeking a Senior Translator to translate complex legal, medical, financial, and technical documents from English to French for various Tribunal departments. This role involves providing French language advice, maintaining terminology, and ensuring accuracy and consistency in translations.

Responsibilities

  • Translate WSIAT decisions and confidential case-related documents, including complex legal and medical terminology.
  • Provide French language advice to WSIAT officials, including the Chair, Adjudicators, and legal teams.
  • Utilize proper legal, medical, and technical terminology.
  • Maintain proper style, format, terminology, and grammar.
  • Ensure consistency, clarity, and accuracy in translations.
  • Ensure translated text retains the meaning, feeling, and intent of the original document.
  • Ensure translated text is consistent with tribunal terminology, grammatically correct, and completed within deadlines.
  • Maintain and update a French Language Lexicon for WSIAT staff.
  • Provide status updates for work and act as the point of contact for French Language Services.
  • Translate the Annual Report, Quarterly Reports, and other WSIAT official publications.
  • Revise, edit, and proofread the Tribunal’s French publications (official public documents).
  • Review translations with outside agencies to ensure conformity to Tribunal standards, performing necessary editing and revisions.
  • Author and revise French language HTML pages for French websites, collaborating with ITS.
  • Test new technical applications for the public website and make translation recommendations.
  • Assist French-speaking parties with technical issues, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Perform periodic checks of the WSIAT Website and Ontario Workplace Tribunals Library Website for translation accuracy.
  • Coordinate the translation of documents with outside agencies.
  • Assign work to outside translation agencies when translation cannot be done in-house.
  • Communicate with agencies regarding expected quality and deadlines.
  • Communicate with authors, including the Chair’s Office and Adjudicators, on confidential matters.
  • Check agencies’ invoices for accuracy before passing them for approval.
  • Act as a French Language Advisor regarding Accessibility and Accommodations issues.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Associate Director, IT Engagement & Innovation.

Requirements

  • Designation as a Certified Translator by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) or an equivalent certification body.
  • Superior oral and written French and English language skills.
  • Knowledge of English-French translation techniques involving complex legal, medical, financial, and technical terminology for a specialized, administrative, adjudicative tribunal.
  • General knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
  • Knowledge of translation and interpretation requirements arising from the French Language Services Act.
  • Knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Office, Trados Studio, Antidote, and database management systems.
  • Ability to coordinate French and foreign language translation quotes and delivery dates with approved vendors.
  • Ability to provide timely status updates and operate as the point of contact for French Language Services.
  • Ability to translate and revise texts for the Tribunal, maintaining approved style, format, and terminology.
  • Ability to ensure consistency, clarity, and accuracy in translations and when reviewing work from outside agencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with the Chair’s Office, WSIAT staff, and external suppliers.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision, exercising initiative and good judgment.
  • Political acuity and tact to work with the Chair’s Office, Adjudicators, and senior executives on confidential materials.
  • Ability to manage a challenging work environment with multiple competing priorities and tight timelines.
  • Ability to identify methods for improving service and managing costs.
  • Ability to assess and develop short/long-term plans.
  • Ability to solicit and evaluate feedback from clients.
