About the Role

National Grid Ventures (NGV) is seeking a Principal System Planning Engineer to support its projects by performing transmission analysis and working with interconnection interfaces in MISO, PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE. This role is crucial for ensuring projects are effectively interconnected to the transmission system and will support key initiatives like offshore wind to drive NGV's growth in the Northeast US.

Responsibilities

  • Perform, lead, or facilitate transmission planning assessments and analyses.
  • Support and advise on production cost modeling, economic and regional market evaluations.
  • Apply innovative approaches to simulation and analysis.
  • Lead technical analysis to support potential project partnerships.
  • Document, present, and report findings and justifications.
  • Prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
  • Support or lead on siting, permitting, and licensing requirements and/or hearings.
  • Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels.
  • Oversee consultants, engineers, or other subject matter experts.
  • Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across NG functions in the US and UK.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in transmission system analysis.
  • Experience with interconnection interfaces in MISO, PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex model outputs into business insight and articulate the impact of results.
  • Broad knowledge of US power industry standards, structures, policies, regulations, and market fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with recent trends and technologies in electric transmission, on-shore and off-shore wind, large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation, and emerging technologies like green hydrogen.
  • Strong track record of relevant professional experience in projects, including developing business cases, optioneering, data analysis, estimating, and work structure planning.
  • Talent for handling and manipulating data to forecast, derive trends, and test sensitivities.
  • Interest in offshore wind project development and execution.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge, and build credibility.
  • Computational literacy including handling large data sets is mandatory.
  • Fundamental understanding of the components of offshore and onshore transmission grid assets, including key risks and opportunities.
  • Ability to develop tools and processes to facilitate best practice and knowledge sharing.
  • Must have the ability to work without the need for current or future visa sponsorship.
