About the Role
Shepherd is seeking a talented Staff Software Engineer passionate about transforming the commercial insurance industry with AI. This role offers the opportunity to lead major initiatives, own significant areas of the product experience, and drive technical decisions. You will work across the stack, collaborate with various teams, and play an integral part in building the company culture and mentoring engineers.
Responsibilities
- Lead major initiatives and own a large area of Shepherd's product experience.
- Drive technical decisions for your domain.
- Work across the stack, including different disciplines like underwriting, design, and product management.
- Play an integral role in building company culture and mentoring engineers as the team scales.
- Balance innovation with pragmatic delivery, staying current with emerging tech while shipping quality products.
- Contribute to product strategy and architectural decisions.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, the CTO, and the insurance team.
Requirements

- Communicates technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Has some experience with insurance (InsurTech or actuarial role).
- Has experience working with Javascript/Typescript (backend and/or frontend).
- Has at least 8+ years of working experience, preferably as a full-stack engineer, with a track record of delivering high-impact products.
