About the Role
The Cook Aide is responsible for implementing food services in Early Child Care Programs serving children ages 0-5, adhering to Department of Health, CACFP, and Head Start Performance Standards. This role involves preparing meals, maintaining kitchen sanitation, managing food stocks, and completing nutrition records. The position requires flexibility as it will evolve during the initial two-year start-up phase.
Responsibilities
- Prepare nutritious meals considering children's diverse cultures and individual nutritional needs.
- Utilize knowledge of child nutritional needs and age-specific portion sizes to prepare meals in accordance with USDA, Head Start, and CACFP guidelines.
- Strictly adhere to health, safety, food handling, and sanitation requirements.
- Prepare and participate in family-style meals for children, volunteers, and staff.
- Maintain nutrition record-keeping and reporting as directed.
- Review food and supplies order sheets.
- Store food and supplies properly.
- Monitor and maintain proper food temperatures.
- Prepare catered meals, including ordering food substitutions and following menus.
- Collaborate with Nutritionist, Health Coordinator, and/or Health Specialist.
- Maintain cleanliness of all kitchen materials and supplies.
- Be aware of and manage center allergies and concerns.
- Train assistants, substitutes, and volunteers to support kitchen duties.
- Coordinate food delivery to classrooms.
- Attend staff meetings and relevant trainings.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift 25 pounds.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Current food handler's certificate.
- Experience in purchasing and preparing culturally diverse foods for groups.
- Knowledge of early childhood nutrition.
- Basic computer skills for record keeping.
- Ability to lift and move heavy or bulky objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, and Sex Offender Registry.
- Three reference checks.
- Physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, Tdap, and MMR.
- Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate every 2 years.
- Comply with agency policy regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect.
