About the Role

Perform basic tasks for the day-to-day operation of wastewater treatment plant facilities, processes, and equipment. Record operational data, make observations, report variations, maintain logs, and implement corrective actions as directed. Assist in maintaining efficient and cost-effective operations while ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Works scheduled shifts and is subject to emergency call-ins or shift coverage.
• Records and reads meters for pumps, gauges, motors, etc., in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Records tank levels and sludge blanket levels.
• Operates equipment pertinent to assigned workstation (GBT, BFP, overhead lifting jib crane, pumps).
• Opens, closes, and adjusts valves for tanks and pumps.
• Observes process areas (pumps, motors, valves, sewage color, odor, flow) and records findings.
• Collects samples for laboratory analysis.
• Receives chemicals in bulk, drum, and tote form.
• Adjusts/bleeds pumps as directed.
• Keeps the workstation and surrounding area safe and clear of debris.
• Inspects equipment for proper functionality and refers to Maintenance for necessary repairs.
• Maintains a logbook for the station being operated.
• Creates work requests for malfunctioning or broken equipment.
• Makes adjustments to equipment to optimize operation (GBT & Dewatering).
• Troubleshoots operational issues and obtains approval before executing.
• Maintains a high level of focus on health, safety, and environment, ensuring safety within all activities.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED is required.
• Associate degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology/Laboratory or related fields preferred.
• Good reading, math, writing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to read and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles, and other equipment.
• Ability to understand/execute written and oral instructions and read/understand technical instructions.
• Ability to interpret data and information from technical service manuals and drawings.
• Knowledge of Windows, Google Workspace, MS Office Suite, and other computer-based systems.
• Knowledge of basic laboratory sampling, testing, and documentation.
• Ability to adjust chemical feeds and processing equipment as directed to maintain compliance.
• Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment and processes.
• Ability to maintain effective working relations with management, supervisors, and staff.
• Ability to work as a team in a teamwork-oriented environment.
• Safety conscious and able to work independently with little or no supervision.
• General understanding of how the treatment plant works and the SPDES limits associated with the station being operated.
• Valid NYS Driver’s license and the ability to meet risk management guidelines.
• Possesses valid NY State Class 1A Wastewater Treatment License is preferred or ability to attend classes required for obtaining valid NY State Wastewater Treatment license and obtain license within 24 months.
