About the Role
The VP, Tax Management & Compliance assists with all tax functions of The Church Pension Fund and its affiliates, including tax planning, research, and compliance. This role also addresses non-tax compliance matters and serves as backup for the VP and SVP Tax Management & Compliance.
Responsibilities
- Operate as a technical resource to various business/corporate units within CPG to resolve tax issues, maintain tax compliance, minimize tax liabilities, and make recommendations.
- Advise as a subject matter expert on federal and state employment tax matters for CPG’s employees, including hybrid/remote employee taxation, state unemployment insurance, FICA, imputed income reporting, and Hong Kong tax compliance.
- Advise as a subject matter expert on tax reporting and income tax withholding for U.S. and Non-U.S. Persons related to retirement benefits, annuities, life insurance, disability benefits, and other benefit plans.
- Collaborate with business and corporate units on the administration of benefit programs, including annual review of Puerto Rico tax forms and clergy housing allowance elections.
- Collaborate with compliance, communications, legal, and business units to update the Episcopal Employer Tax Reporting Guide and Episcopal Clergy Tax Guide, and income tax withholding forms.
- Collaborate with business and corporate units to ensure gathering of appropriate tax documents from nonresident aliens for tax reporting and withholding.
- Responsible for the annual calculation of federal excise tax under Internal Revenue Code Section 4960 and timely filing of Form 4720.
- Responsible for the tax reporting process of informational tax forms, ensuring accurate and timely filing and deposits of withheld taxes.
- Responsible for managing the completion of the annual Form 720, Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return, for the VEBA and executing the payment for the PCORI fee.
- Responsible for annually renewing New York City real property tax exemption for CPG properties.
- Daily monitoring of federal, state, and international tax updates, including prospective tax legislation.
- Advise business and corporate units on changes to federal and state tax laws and regulations, and recommend modifications to procedures or operations.
- Responsible for resolving compliance inquiries and examinations from tax authorities, including working with external advisors.
- Responsible for developing, maintaining, and updating policies & procedures for all CPG tax functions.
- Develop and review annual enterprise tax risk assessments, identify compliance gaps, and collaborate to mitigate risk.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing tax team while fostering collaboration and managing relationships with external tax preparers and consultants.
- Manage business relationships with external tax advisors and consultants, and communicate effectively with CPG employees and external parties.
- Analyze, interpret, and apply critical thinking to assess risk and make sound business decisions.
- Assist the SVP of Tax Management & Compliance with enterprise projects or initiatives.
- Perform essential functions requiring regular in-person, on-site interaction for relationship building and collaboration.
Requirements
- Significant involvement with large tax compliance engagements for complex organizations at a major public accounting firm.
- Experience with tax issues relating to employee benefit plans.
- Experience with international individual and corporate taxation.
- Experience with tax issues affecting non-profit organizations.
- Experience with compliance issues relating to payroll and unclaimed property.
- Experience performing as a subject matter expert for multiple corporate departments and managing relationships with external tax advisors.
- Ability to self-manage.
