About the Role

The Peer Specialist works within the Oneida Crisis Residence Program, a community-based residential program offering a therapeutic environment for adults experiencing a mental health crisis. The role utilizes individuals with lived experience to provide peer support services, aiming to stabilize crisis, support community reintegration, and prevent unnecessary hospitalizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide required services to guests enrolled in the Supportive Crisis Residence, including assistance with personal care, peer support, safety planning, case management, and medication monitoring.
  • Offer peer support in alignment with Peer and Recovery-Oriented models.
  • Deliver crisis intervention, teaching individuals to reframe crises and use wellness tools for prevention.
  • Collaborate with Health Homes, hospitals, and treatment providers to create integrated care plans.
  • Provide advocacy, peer support, referral, and linkage services for program guests.
  • Offer program coverage, including required overnights.
  • Complete all required documentation, such as Individual Service Plans, assessments, safety plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries within program standards.

Requirements

  • Work experience in a behavioral health or related setting, preferably using the recovery model.
  • One to two years of personal recovery experience is preferred.
  • Personal experience as a recipient of mental health services with a willingness to share insights.
  • Certified by the Office of Mental Health (OMH) as a Certified Peer Specialist or willing to complete certification within six months of employment.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Respect for, compassion, and comfort around individuals experiencing psychiatric crisis.
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking, problem-solving, and de-escalation skills.
