About the Role
The Housing Specialist will join The Doe Fund's growing team at their 510 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn facility, reporting to the Senior Housing Specialist. This role is crucial in supporting the organization's mission to break cycles of homelessness, addiction, and recidivism by assisting clients in securing and maintaining housing.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a caseload of a minimum of 20 clients.
- Conduct housing assessments and develop individualized housing plans.
- Coordinate housing searches, apartment viewings, lease signings, and housing appointments.
- Interface with landlords and management companies to establish working relationships.
- Create and maintain relationships with the DHS Housing Placement Unit.
- Oversee landlord and management company compliance with housing laws, building codes, and lease agreements.
- Work in conjunction with Social Services to identify potential clients for housing.
- Resolve crises or conflicts with landlords and management companies.
- Ensure uniformity in maintaining fair housing standards.
- Develop and maintain a database of available housing.
- Identify new housing opportunities through ongoing networks.
- Prepare and/or coordinate reports related to housing codes and compliance.
- Guide clients through subsidy applications and documentation requirements.
- Prepare housing packages for various programs.
- Collaborate with Case Management staff on psycho-social applications and document access.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- A High School Diploma is required.
- Experience in Human Services, Case Management or Counseling.
- Knowledge of NYC housing programs and subsidies.
- Experience working with CARES and CurRent preferred.
- Work experience negotiating lease agreements with landlords and/or realtor management companies.
- Provide housing for special needs populations.
- Knowledge of applicable state and city housing and disability laws and codes.
- Computer proficiency, Google Suite and Microsoft Office Programs, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Proficiency in email and database management.
- A valid driver’s license preferred.
