About the Role
We are seeking self-motivated, collaborative, and highly organized Lab Manager candidates for potential opportunities within our labs. The Lab Manager role supervises and performs technical and administrative tasks to support research and operational needs, coordinates equipment maintenance, ensures adequate supplies, supports personnel management, manages lab safety programs, and assists with lab space planning.
Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including ensuring operation of crucial equipment and adequate supplies.
- Review budgets.
- Act as liaison between the lab and HHMI and host institution administrative offices on issues such as budget management, fixed asset inventories, purchasing, and use of host accounts.
- Act as liaison between the lab and host safety and regulatory offices to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Develop laboratory guidelines and maintain procedures manuals.
- Evaluate new materials and equipment.
- Train incoming personnel in appropriate lab conduct.
- Train others in technical areas and sophisticated processes.
- Carry out research projects.
- Evaluate new techniques and technology.
- Plan for and provide working supervision to the work of Research Technicians or other junior laboratory personnel.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in health or physical sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
- Three or more years of laboratory experience.
- At least one year of supervisory experience.
- Operational knowledge of advanced lab equipment.
- Ability to supervise others.
- Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style.
- In-depth understanding of organizational structure both within and outside the work unit.
- Ability to develop instructional material for routine training purposes.
- Ability to review goals, analyze processes vital to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals.
- Ability to explore new areas and seek opportunities to apply new knowledge to work.
- Ability to remain in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods.
- Ability to reach and grasp by extending hand(s) or arm(s).
- Dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers.
- Ability to communicate using the spoken word.
- Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
- Ability to move about workspace.
- Ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds.
