About the Role

This role provides legal services in support of assigned litigation matters, maintaining responsibility for a caseload and collaborating with claims professionals, insureds, and business partners to achieve favorable outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Handles insurance defense or coverage matters through all stages of litigation, including Trial.
  • Manages litigation preparation and develops case strategy.
  • Prepares and directs the preparation of necessary materials, including briefs, motions, discovery, depositions, and expert-related matters.
  • Evaluates litigation and settlement strategies and actively drives cases toward resolution.
  • Handles court appearances, motion practice, discovery, negotiations, and trial-related activities.
  • Participates in bench and jury trials in state and federal court.
  • Communicates regularly and concisely with clients, claim professionals, leadership and others.
  • Conducts legal research and analysis of facts and information to provide counsel and guidance.
  • Prepares opinions or position papers on various legal issues and interpretation of legal issues/provisions.
  • Counsels client/management/claim professionals to avoid legally unsound decisions or plans and when changes in the law occur.
  • May assist in training or mentoring attorneys, paralegals, and department staff.
  • Collaboratively works with clients, claim professionals, underwriting, risk control and other third parties.
  • Works independently in resolving legal cases with oversight supervision.
  • Responds to government regulatory agencies as needed.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and procedures of litigation management within an insurance organization.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to understand business goals and objectives and apply sound judgment to support effective legal and business outcomes.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software ie TeamConnect or other case management software.

Experience Level

  • Minimum of five years of law firm experience, corporate legal department, insurance organization, or similar legal environment.
  • Experience handling civil litigation matters, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, and dispute resolution preferred.
  • Prior experience in insurance defense, coverage, or related litigation practice areas is preferred.

Education Level

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree required.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar and active license to practice law in New York required.

Salary/Compensations

  • $72,000 to $141,000 annually
