About the Role

The Head Men’s & Women’s Tennis Coach is responsible for organizing and managing the varsity intercollegiate NCAA Division III men’s and women’s programs. This includes teaching, coaching, monitoring academic success, recruiting, civic engagement, budget and schedule management, fundraising, and developing alumnae and parent relations. The role also involves planning, implementing, and assessing athletic and success programs, assisting with staff development, and leading the intramural program.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, professionalism, and good judgment.
  • Provide a nurturing, intellectual, and supportive teaching and learning environment.
  • Develop strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to prepare the team for competition.
  • Prepare, implement, and evaluate practice and competition plans.
  • Develop and employ a team philosophy supportive of the university's educational mission.
  • Direct student-athletes, assistant coaches, and support staff to represent the team and university positively.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with student-athletes.
  • Set high standards of ethical and moral conduct.
  • Reinforce academic success as a priority.
  • Monitor academic progress in communication with the Associate Director of Athletics & Recreation and Compliance Coordinator.
  • Encourage positive relationships between student-athletes and advisors, faculty, deans, and academic support.
  • Monitor eligibility of student-athletes.
  • Articulate and implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University’s mission.
  • Cultivate a recruiting network.
  • Maintain the department’s recruiting contact management system.
  • Recruit student-athletes that align with the academic profile of Alfred University students.
  • Maintain open communication with other coaches regarding shared prospects.
  • Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Meet recruiting goals.
  • Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations.
  • Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities.
  • Participate in department professional development seminars.
  • Promote the sport in area communities.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with community segments.
  • Comply with institutional and departmental policies.
  • Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaching staff.
  • Work collaboratively with department staff.
  • Develop a competitive schedule.
  • Establish a sport budget in collaboration with the AVP for Student Experience, Athletics, & Recreation.
  • Effectively manage the sport program within the budget allocation.
  • Responsibly manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Work collaboratively with Advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities.
  • Maintain appropriate coach-athlete relationships.
  • Develop positive relationships with alumnae and parents of current, former, and prospective student-athletes.
  • Maintain a safe work environment within and around facilities and associated equipment.
  • Coordinate intramural sports.
  • Serve on a department operational team.
  • Represent the department on campus committees.
  • Support and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Support and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Participate in all required assigned training, including safety training.
  • Comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of four years as a collegiate tennis student-athlete and/or head or assistant coach is required.
  • Demonstrated successful collegiate coaching, recruiting, and retention of student-athletes, preferably at NCAA Division III, is required.
  • Proven organizational and management skills.
  • A recognizable commitment to student growth and academic achievement.
  • Overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required.
  • Must be a person of integrity and high ethical standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to teamwork.
  • Competence with technology resources.
  • A current U.S. driver’s license is vital.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends.
  • Must be CPR/AED/First Aid certified.
  • Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required.
  • A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required.
  • Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present.
  • May require walking outdoors in all types of weather.
  • The campus may not always be fully accessible for mobility-impaired individuals.
