About the Role

The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office (SFSO) is seeking a Sheriff's Sergeant to function as a line-level supervisor across various divisions, including Custody, Field Operations, Administration and Programs, and Planning and Projects. This role involves supervising inmates, bailiffs, and sworn/civilian staff in diverse law enforcement and administrative duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise sworn staff in the care and control of inmates in county jail or jail alternative programs.
  • Maintain order and security in and around jail facilities.
  • Supervise line staff in routine jail duties such as cell inspections, contraband searches, inmate movement, and counts.
  • Perform administrative duties involving computer operations, calculations, policy explanations, and inmate grievance investigations.
  • Serve as Assistant Watch Commander and acting Watch Commander.
  • Assume facility area command during jail emergencies like fights, riots, or fires.
  • Diffuse potential problem situations by identifying inmate emotional and physical conditions.
  • Supervise inmate movement under exceptional circumstances and assure proper documentation of jail emergencies.
  • Supervise bailiffs in civil, criminal, and juvenile courts.
  • Serve as a field operations or support services supervisor in receiving and enforcement of civil processes.
  • Supervise and perform law enforcement and administrative duties related to criminal, internal affairs, or background investigations.
  • Supervise training officers assigned to the Training Unit.
  • Supervise warrants service for the Central Records and Warrants Unit and Community Programs.
  • Supervise inmate transportation, including inter-facility and out-of-country transportation, and transfers of arrestees.
  • Supervise personnel functions, including hiring, performance evaluations, and disability accounting.
  • Perform and supervise sworn and civilian staff in public building and grounds security operations.
  • Serve as commander of established Sections, Units, and other subdivisions of the San Francisco Sheriff's Office.
  • Perform and supervise related law enforcement duties as assigned, codified under section 830.1 PC.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office in classes 8302 Deputy Sheriff I/8304/8504 Deputy Sheriff/8306/8506 Senior Deputy Sheriff, or any combination thereof.
  • Possession of a POST Basic Certificate.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must meet minimum qualifications by close of application filing.
  • Falsifying education, training, or work experience may result in disqualification.
