About the Role
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to Quality Enhancement Programs and Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing patient specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process.
- Initiate and monitor dialysis treatments, including vital signs, vascular access evaluation, and administration of medication.
- Operate and maintain hemodialysis machines, including safety checks and alarm management.
- Document patient information, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately and timely.
- Report any significant changes in patient condition or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
- Clean and disinfect dialysis equipment and surrounding areas between treatments.
- Prepare and collect laboratory specimens as required.
- Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff.
- Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics of the work area.
- Follow all organization business policies, procedures, and systems.
- Assist in collecting information for infection control audits and support adherence to infection control practices.
- Follow newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care.
- Liaise with appropriate staff members to ensure the best patient experience.
- Assist in assuring patient understanding of home dialysis products and benefits.
- Perform treatments on all machines used in the transitional care unit.
- Assist in assuring patient understanding of treatment options, including demonstration of peritoneal dialysis setup.
- Coordinate transition to patient's modality choice.
- Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
Requirements
- Must be flexible to work 12+-hour rotating shifts, including early mornings (as early as 4:30 AM) and late evenings (until 12 midnight).
- Must be available to work two Saturdays per month.
- Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.
- Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations will be considered for those who do not pass.
- Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required timeline.
- All appropriate state licensure, education, and training must be obtained.
