About the Role

Performs secretarial/clerical duties while acting as a communication center for the nursing unit. Performs specific patient care procedures under the direction of a licensed Nurse and/or performs specific support procedures for the operation of a Nursing or Clinical Department. Operates patient monitoring systems.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and directs customers, promoting accurate and timely unit communication and keeping locator boards current.
  • Answers telephones and processes information, including transcribing physicians orders.
  • Communicates and processes paperwork for patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring Medical Records are complete.
  • Maintains census and bed status reports, assembles patient charts, and files reports.
  • Maintains office supplies and assists in maintaining nursing unit cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Monitors, collects, and records patient information, vital signs, weights, and transports patients.
  • Participates in patient nutritional well-being through tray delivery, assistance with set-up, and feeding, accurately recording input and output.
  • Assists with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, positioning, and ambulation.
  • Communicates pertinent information before end of shift summation.
  • Rounds on patients and families to assess and address needs, reporting issues to the nurse.
  • Inserts and removes gastric and urethral tubes, performs enemas and disimpactions, removes peripheral IV lines, and performs phlebotomy after specific training.
  • Operates patient monitoring systems and performs bedside testing such as Oximetry, ECG, and Glucometery.
  • Performs wound care and dressing changes, removes staples and sutures, assists with sterile procedures, and assists with restraint application/removal under RN direction.
  • Applies oxygen delivery devices as ordered and assists patients with oxygen use.
  • Documents all care provided, assembles patient charts, posts results, and uses the computerized documentation system.
  • Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology, and Pathology, and transports x-rays, blood products, and equipment.
  • Ensures cleanliness of nutrition areas and unit, cleans and stores equipment, empties trash, stocks supplies, inventories equipment, and processes broken equipment.
  • Performs other required functions.

Requirements

  • High School/GED
  • Clinical experience OR completion of Unit Secretary course OR completion of self-study module preferred.
  • Must successfully complete competency verification before starting on assigned unit.
  • BLS required at time of hire
