About the Role

MotherDuck is building a cloud-hosted version of DuckDB, aiming to make data warehousing fun and frictionless for developers. This role focuses on the core server and client extension logic, pushing the boundaries of embedded database performance, distributed execution, and user experience, while collaborating closely with DuckDB Labs.

Responsibilities

  • Own major projects in our dual execution stack, enabling seamless query processing locally and in the cloud.
  • Build a cloud platform for dynamic resource assignment to maintain efficiency across workloads.
  • Lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams for a coherent user experience.
  • Advance the state of the art in embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals.
  • Deepen DuckDB expertise and share knowledge through mentorship and documentation.
  • Work with the support team to debug issues, learn from usage patterns, and prioritize improvements.
  • Improve systems holistically by identifying and resolving architectural challenges and bottlenecks.
  • Mentor teammates and elevate engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with DuckDB Labs to align on APIs and influence the future direction of DuckDB.

Requirements

  • Experience building and shipping complex backend systems.
  • Fluency in a backend language such as C++, Rust, Java, or similar systems languages.
  • Comfort working close to the metal.
  • A good foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with DuckDB is a significant plus.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking, and building low-latency distributed systems.
  • Ability to scope and lead projects with multiple collaborators and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Pride in clear thinking, careful design, and thoughtful tradeoffs.
  • Comfort mentoring peers and fostering a collaborative, high-agency environment.
  • Enjoyment in engaging with the wider community, including open-source conversations and direct work with DuckDB Labs.
