About the Role
MotherDuck is building a cloud-hosted version of DuckDB, aiming to make data warehousing fun and frictionless for developers. This role focuses on the core server and client extension logic, pushing the boundaries of embedded database performance, distributed execution, and user experience, in close collaboration with DuckDB Labs.
Responsibilities
- Own major projects in our dual execution stack, enabling seamless query processing for local and cloud environments.
- Build a cloud platform for dynamic resource assignment to maintain DuckDB efficiency across various workloads.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to ensure a coherent end-to-end user experience.
- Advance the state of the art in embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals.
- Deepen DuckDB expertise and share knowledge through mentorship and documentation.
- Collaborate with the support team to debug issues, analyze usage patterns, and prioritize improvements.
- Identify and address architectural challenges and system bottlenecks proactively.
- Mentor teammates and elevate engineering practices across the team.
- Align with DuckDB Labs on APIs and contribute to the future direction of DuckDB.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping complex backend systems.
- Fluency in a backend language such as C++, Rust, Java, or similar systems languages.
- Comfort working close to the hardware.
- A strong foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization techniques.
- Hands-on experience with DuckDB is a significant advantage.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking, and building low-latency distributed systems.
- Ability to scope and lead projects with multiple collaborators and cross-functional dependencies.
- A commitment to clear thinking, careful design, and thoughtful tradeoffs.
- Comfort mentoring peers and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Enjoyment of engaging with the wider community, including open-source conversations and collaboration with DuckDB Labs.
