About the Role
The Technical Manager (Head of Video) will serve as the subject matter expert for their discipline within the Audio Visual Industry, managing all aspects of event pre-planning, on-site management, equipment maintenance, and post-show activities. This role requires the ability to operate and troubleshoot high-end equipment, interface with warehouse leads, design systems, and manage large event systems. The Technical Manager will also mentor and develop technicians, negotiate with supply chains, drive innovation, and maximize project profitability.
Responsibilities
- Partner with Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and clients to design, pre-plan, and manage all aspects of their expertise.
- Complete necessary technical drawings, production plans, labor needs, budgets, and equipment selection.
- Assist other departments by recommending technology, processes, and methodologies.
- Ensure discipline meets or exceeds client needs by managing the production plan, budget, and safety standards.
- Set and properly test technical components.
- Operate designated equipment for events as needed.
- Provide leadership to assigned crew, including internal and external team members.
- Abide by all health and safety requirements and ensure team members and subcontractors adhere to them.
- Recommend areas of improvement to the HSE Manager.
- Manage post-show activities, including final labor, timesheets, expenses, sub-rentals, and equipment maintenance.
- Complete reporting information and provide feedback for post-show documentation.
- Provide excellent customer service and strive to exceed customer expectations.
- Meet with clients on-site as necessary to ensure needs are met and equipment setup is functioning properly.
- Promote a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Manage performance, address employee concerns, maintain staffing levels, and facilitate team development.
- Manage HR activities including selection, performance management, and learning.
- Provide focused and continued coaching to develop team member skills.
- Train employees on company standards for service and equipment.
- Recommend team members for training opportunities.
Requirements
- Must have a strong technical background in the Audio Visual Industry with expert-level skills in a specific discipline (Audio, Video, Lighting, Rigging, or Power Distribution).
- Must have the ability to operate/troubleshoot high-end equipment.
- Must have familiarity with major brands of audio-visual systems and components in a large venue situation.
- Must be able to mentor and develop technicians.
- May be required to negotiate with supply chains and drive innovation.
- Must maximize profitability on a project-by-project basis by using company equipment and labor.
- May or may not manage a team of Technical Specialists.
- Must report to the Director, Project Management or General Manager, UAE as appropriate.
- BA/BS Degreed or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of live large venue audio visual experience.
- 5+ years of knowledge of Audio Visual and expert-level technical skill set in a discipline.
- 2+ years crew lead experience (not necessarily direct reports).
- Strong customer service skills.
- Excellent organization skills.
- Advanced problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 75%.
