About the Role

The Engineering Manager will lead the Track design on the HS2 Track infrastructure project during its initial design phase, working collaboratively within an Alliance structure to manage interfaces and resolve program conflicts.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability and quality.
  • Manage the design process to ensure solutions are safe, efficient to build, compliant with specifications, and delivered on schedule and within budget.
  • Manage the Scheme Design through Detailed Design, construction support, and As-Built stages, adhering to Works Information and HS2 assurance processes.
  • Coordinate and monitor the performance of Designers and specialist design subcontractors/suppliers.
  • Participate in technical reviews, progressive assurance activities, and CDM compliance.
  • Promote the use of engineering expertise and modern construction methods to add value.
  • Implement 3D design delivery strategy to meet project BIM Execution Plan requirements.
  • Input into internal, client, and external engineering workshops and steering groups.
  • Perform reviews of technical proposals.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks.
  • Manage the design program, monitoring and reporting progress.
  • Obtain relevant documentation and approvals from relevant bodies, designers, and stakeholders.
  • Interface with Network Rail and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide expert guidance and technical support to clients and project teams.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, ensuring compliance with statutory, legal, and planning requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design safety, buildability, quality, and value.
  • Coordinate the entire design process, managing change, information approvals, and collaborating with clients, representatives, design teams, and legislative bodies.
  • Organize and chair design coordination and progress meetings.
  • Ensure design risk assessments are produced.
  • Prepare minutes, notes, and reports for effective communication and record-keeping.
  • Manage the document control process.

Requirements

  • Strong leadership and management skills with a positive and collaborative approach.
  • Degree qualification in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • Professionally Qualified, preferably a Chartered Engineer.
  • Experience in design and/or engineering management of Rail Projects, preferably track.
  • Knowledge of design procedures and standards.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery.
  • Wide and varied experience of the construction process from concept and detailed design to practical construction phase and handover.
  • Understanding of the planning and technical skills necessary to undertake the role.
  • Good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes, and risk management.
  • Good collaborative planning skills.
  • Thorough understanding of 3D design and BIM, with a desire to drive improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both personal and formal reporting.
  • Practical experience of harmonizing design and quality requirements with buildability.
  • Strong desire to problem-solve.
