About the Role

Cleveland Clinic London is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) with a good scientific background to work night shifts. This role is crucial for supporting Registered Biomedical Scientists in processing pathology samples, maintaining laboratory standards, and ensuring the accuracy of diagnostic services within a leading healthcare organization.

Responsibilities

• Book patient details and test requests on the pathology computer system.
• Receive specimens for investigations and prepare them for laboratory testing according to defined protocols.
• Ensure specimen and request form details are correct and discuss ambiguous test requests with senior scientists or clinicians.
• Prepare samples for a wide range of tests.
• Participate in laboratory bench work or automated analysis following standard operating procedures.
• Communicate any difficulties, accidents, or incidents to a section leader promptly.
• Enter test results on the pathology computer system.
• Observe departmental quality control policies.
• Package biological samples for testing at external centers in accordance with handling regulations for biohazard materials.
• Avoid contamination with infectious materials, report leakages to senior staff, and strictly follow departmental Health and Safety Rules.
• Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if back-up stocks are low.
• Undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and benches.
• Support Registered Biomedical Scientists (BMS) in the preparation and processing of pathology samples across a range of laboratory areas.
• Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Maintain laboratory standards.
• Assist with specimen sorting, registration onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and analyser maintenance.
• Process a variety of clinical samples, including blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, and tissues.
• Work collaboratively with pathology staff, hospital teams, porters, drivers, and couriers.

Requirements

• Good basic education to GCSE Level (Essential)
• Willing to undergo relevant laboratory training in accordance with ISO15189 (Essential)
• Some experience working in Clinical research, Educational or diagnostic laboratory (Essential)
• Experience of working in a clinical setting (Essential)
• Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent (Desirable)
• Interest in working to a higher level of qualification such as gaining HCPC registration (Desirable)
• Experience of working in a relevant routine laboratory (Desirable)
• Experience in working in a hospital setting (Desirable)
• Knowledge of working with EPIC systems or Laboratory LIMS (Desirable)
• Role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check.
