About the Role

Under the general supervision of a licensed physician, the provider evaluates and treats patients with medical and/or surgical problems. Performs patient histories, physical examinations, and interprets diagnostic tests. Participates in teaching and quality assurance activities, delivering direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Performs patient histories and physical examinations.
• Orders laboratory tests and radiographic studies.
• Performs and/or interprets laboratory and test results.
• Initiates patient treatment.
• Responds to initial requests for service-specific consultation.
• Initiates or participates in initial management and stabilization of patients or medical/surgical emergencies.
• Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions.
• Prescribes controlled substances under personal active DEA license or physician counter-signature.
• Performs routine or emergency procedures including irrigation, debridement, suturing/repair of wounds or incisions, insertion/removal of nasogastric tubes and indwelling urinary catheters, insertion/removal of intravenous lines, sampling of arterial blood, placement/removal of arterial lines, removal of surgical drains, placement/management of external ventricular and lumbar drains, placement/management of intracranial monitors.
• Acts as assistant in operating areas, angiography suites, and procedural areas.
• Performs preoperative and post-operative evaluation and renders related medical care.
• Confers with attending physicians, residents, and nursing staff to ensure quality patient care.
• Confers regularly with Supervising Physician and/or Physician Assistant and co-workers regarding clinical developments and patient concerns.
• Participates in special projects assigned by department attendings.
• Helps prepare and analyze QA/PI data for review.
• Arranges follow-up for patients.
• Obtains informed consent from patients for procedures.
• Recalls patients for further evaluation and treatment.
• Escorts patients to other areas of the hospital when necessary.
• Informs patients of necessary pre-surgical and post-discharge instructions.
• Makes appropriate entries in patients charts.
• Completes and documents participation in continuing medical education required for physician assistants.
• Performs other duties as required by supervising physician(s), Director of Service, and/or Supervising Physician Assistant.

Requirements

• Completion of NYS-approved program for training of physician assistant.
• Bachelor of Science degree in a closely related field.
• Valid New York State license and registration as a Physician Assistant.
• Registration with New York State as Physician Assistant.
• Certification with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent).
• Certification with American Heart Association or like organization in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required.
• DEA from DOH/Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.
• Current Infection Control certificate.
• Basic MS Office Suite skill.
• High level of analytical ability required to diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems.
• Ability to interact with various hospital medical, administrative, and professional staff.
• High degree of professional responsibility for daily contacts with patients and families.
• Manual dexterity for manipulation of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
• Physical strength necessary for lifting and patient positioning.
