About the Role
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an RN with advanced clinical nursing education and certification in a distinct specialty area. NPs are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for patients within their specialty, with no requirement for physician countersignature on medical orders, progress notes, or treatment plans.
Responsibilities
- Assesses patient/family health status through comprehensive history and physical examination.
- Initiates and orders diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations.
- Prescribes medication regimens and interprets findings to adjust care plans.
- Educates and counsels patients on health promotion, disease prevention, and illness management.
- Documents findings and care plans in patient medical records.
- Consults with physicians according to established standards and protocols.
- Provides age-appropriate care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria.
- Initiates referrals to specialty services and ensures continuity of care.
- Participates in team meetings and conferences for interdisciplinary care.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality.
- Develops care plans based on diagnoses and individual patient needs.
- Records, reports, and interprets client responses to the care plan.
- Performs patient record review with a collaborating physician at least every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement.
- Completes Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required for credentialing.
- Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to Medical Staff rules and bylaws.
- Supports the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and MSHS.
- Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice.
- Considers ethical issues and adheres to the nursing code of ethics.
- Demonstrates a kind, caring, and humanistic attitude in healthcare delivery.
- Serves as a resource to nurses and other health team members.
- Participates in peer review.
- Incorporates research findings into clinical practice.
- Participates in approved nursing and medical research studies.
- Maintains current knowledge through self-directed learning and educational programs.
- Participates in defining, maintaining, and interpreting nursing practice standards.

Requirements
- At least two years of nursing experience in the applied specialty area.
- At least one year of Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
- New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.
- Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration.
- Graduate of a New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent, OR certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
- Completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or equivalent.
- Instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).
- Possesses a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours of Nurse Practitioner experience.
- Possesses a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital if there is a documented work history of greater than 3600 practice hours as a Nurse Practitioner.
- All NPs will initially be placed on an FPPE regardless of status.
- National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required for all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019.
- National Board Certification required for NPs who bill for professional services, regardless of hire date.
- Board Certification requirement may be deferred up to 1 year if approved by Chief Nursing Officer or designee.
- Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges.
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), and The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificates as required by specialty.
